NonaLou’s – Fat Fridays
The story of NonaLou’s and FatBottomGirls_Cakes…
Seonaid and Louise are childhood friends, growing up together in the small village of Lochfoot. As children they would frequently talk about their perfect café idea and rather bizarrely dress up as ‘The Two Fat Ladies’ to host pretend cookery shows. After graduating from university and struggling to find full time employment, they decided to make their pretend café a reality and began planning what would eventually open as NonaLou’s Tearoom.
The tearoom was their pride and joy (and source of stress) for 7 years and to their delight they were recognised with The Princes Trust Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, they were runners up in the Visit Scotland Thistle awards and their passion for locally sourced ingredients led to membership of the Taste our Best scheme.
The self-taught bakers were always keen to try something new and soon Fat Friday was born. A sugar coma inducing cake, with a different twist every week. Soon this concept became a must have at weddings, with brides and grooms choosing to have Fat Fridays laid out or stacked high, instead of the traditional fondant cake.
Fat Bottom Girls Cakes was launched in 2018 after the cakes to order side of NonaLou’s tearoom had grown and required an increasingly significant proportion of the girls’ time. The wedding cake offering developed to include multiple styles, flavours and tiers, and in March 2019, NonaLou’s closed to allow the cake business to receive the girls’ full attention.
The closure of NonaLou’s was felt most by the regular band of Fat Friday fans who would descend for their fix of NonaLou’s most extravagant of cakes.
But fear not, Fat Friday is not dead…
